Sue says: HANA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sue says: GUESS WHAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hana-nator says: ...what?
Sue says: I FOUND MORRIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hana-nator says: No way!
Sue says: YES WAY!
Hana-nator says: where?!
Sue says: I was unwrapping my treasure chest where I keep your old baby clothes etc, and precious linen.... that chest that had the knitting needles in it.... anyhow I tipped it up on one side and things rolled a bit... and lo and behold there was MORRIS!
Hana-nator says: !!!! I thought for sure he got nicked when the maori fella broke into our house
Sue says: Well I am trying to figure out when I would have packed him in there.... I found your little dolls that you loved when you were a dot, and Morris... as well as my own dolls.
Hana-nator says: how strange that he was packed away and not Helen
Sue says: Yes... you still have Helen don't you?
Hana-nator says: yes!
Sue says: Well I am not sure why Morris got packed in to the trunk as I am sure I would not have packed him without asking you first..... it's a mystery... but when I found him I nearly tried phoning you I was so excited!
Hana-nator says: that's just great. I was gutted about losing him
Sue says: Yes I know... but like I said, I would not have packed him away without talking to you about it so not sure how he got in there.
Hana-nator says: I think, maybe, it was in the months before we moved, and I had to pack away a lot of things I wasn't playing with? And I only kept perhaps three or four of my stuffed toys out, and then we completely forgot about it?
Sue says: It could be..... can't think of any other explanation.....

Helen and Morris are cabbage patch dolls. I got them when I was about three or four. Helen is white, with brown hair and blue eyes. I forget what her original dress was, but she has these cute white sandals. Morris is bald, black, and came in a spiffing sailor suit. He even had some diapers of the plastic variety, but those got torn up by our cat Mac in Colorado when we went to visit the four corners one year.
I had a lot of stuffed toys. I had Helen and Morris, Strawberry Shortcake, Minne Mouse, Pink Panther, various Koalas, Wombats, and other dolls, many of which had the name Matilda, Missy bear (a Christmas bear), a unicorn, a yellow and orange hedgehog... I have a picture somewhere of them all lined up in a row on my bed, my brother's stuffed toys lined up on his bed, which was right next to mine. Well, when we moved back to New Zealand, only about a half of them returned. Helen and Morris came back.
Girls grow, as they do, and play with other toys, but I always kept Helen and Morris, and even found them new clothes, so I had her wearing new and exciting dresses, and I had him looking like a little Jamaican dude. They were cool. They lived in a little cot (still have that), and all was well.
However, I remember coming home from school one fine day, when I was about 12 or 13, I suppose... no one was home. Gary had left back for the states by then. Iain lived with dad. Mum was at work. And I came home, and things were a little weird, not where they'd been when we'd left in the morning, but I thought nothing of it, until I came into the kitchen and found the dog door cut into little pieces, so someone could climb through the hole in the glass.
Turned out, nothing of value had been taken. We were lucky, really. Some weeks later we found out the culprit had been caught doing another B&E, and confessed to several more, including ours. He liked our dog. Thank the gods he didn't nick of with Fly!
Anyway, sometime later I noticed Morris was missing. Couldn't think where he could be. It was too late to do anything about it, but we guessed he'd been nicked by the maori fella who broke in, for a little sibling or cousin maybe, b/c it was a black cabbage patch doll. I was gutted, but what could I do?
Although, even now, six years since then, it still saddened me about the loss. Especially when we were going through the stuff that had been in storage and found Helen! What is Helen without Morris? (They have a new friend now though, a black girl cabbage patch doll I found in St. Vincent de Paul's once, yet to be named) Well, now Helen will no longer be alone.
The crate where everything had been stored got shipped off the the States and arrived a few days ago. Mum has been going through everything. She's been crying over old photos of us kids, and cards we've given her over the years. Considering the sorting we did back when I arrived in NZ was only a cursory one, it's no wonder we missed stuff. She's found not only Morris (yay!) but some other stuff that's also mine. They'll just go into the boxes of my stuff that are going to be shipped back to NZ.
