Realising I haven't posted an entry since March. I should do something about that.

So, my birthday was last Monday, I turned 28. There was cake, and a couple parcels of goodies from my mum, couple of cards & plenty of happy birthdays on FB and such. A good day. Unfortunately, it's fallen during a whole week of mood swings, acne breakouts, tender boobies... basically, some of the worst and longest lasting PMS I've encountered since my teen years. Normally if I get moodiness it's a day or two and then my period hits. So far, no period, just lots of ups and downs and unexpected tears. Even had a few cross words with hubs because apparently as he was pushing some of my buttons in my crankiness I was pushing some of his right back.

And it wasn't helped but us being guilt-tripped into hosting his mother at a t time we didn't really want to. She'd been to stay recently but there were Reasons. It would have been tolerable if it was one or two nights but we were looking at an extended stay of possibly two weeks. He was able to pull a half day on Wednesday though and take her home a bit earlier. I like my Mother in Law but she wants to chatter and then looks through the brochures and comes up with a new list every day of things she'd like us to go pick up from the shops from her. Plus cooking meals at an earlier time and making sure it's something she can eat... all of it was just an extra bit of hassle at a time where my hormones are already fucking with me something fierce.

Plus it's winter and cold and fuck that shit.

I haven't been writing the fanfic like I intended to earlier this year, which is very slack of me. Still stuck on making the words and stories in my head form something coherent outside for the world to see. But I have made a few new fandom friends on twitter so I am feeling a bit accomplished for peeking out of my shell just a bit.

Have been to see several of the new movies at the theatres over the last few months, like Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness, ones that I thought would look excellent in 3D. The exception to that though was going to the Chick Flick night a week or so ago, where for $25 I got a movie ticket, glass of wine, ice cream, chocolate, and a bag of goodies (pamphlets and vouchers mostly) from local businesses. I went with my step-son Joe's girlfriend Kayla, and the movie we saw was The Heat. Incredibly hilarious I was very glad that all the good reviews I heard were not over hyping it.

Okay, okay, RL post...

Got a temporary job doing stocktake at Alan's store. It's only for a month (two weeks already gone) but hey, it's a bit of extra dosh and quite handy for shelling out on necessities like firewood, and not so necessary, like Amanda Palmer's kickstarter project because it is so utterly cool and exciting how fast she raised money. And she's funny and I love following both her and Neil Gaiman on twitter because they are an adorable couple.

Also on twitter, amusing to follow Zachary Quinto & Simon Pegg and see them getting up to shenanigans in Hooters with Cumberbatch (I don't even watch the new Sherlock)... weirdest thing is reading Leonard Nimoy's posts with his voice in my head.

Anyway, back to the job thing... it means getting up at 5 a.m. two mornings in a row, which is a bitch but survivable. Although, fuck this cold. I know it's heading into winter but fuck the cold. Winter also means July also means my birthday means holy shit I'm almost twenty-fucking-SEVEN ayfkm surely I only turned 17 last year. My brother is going to be 30, which is supposed to be grown-up, right? Except it's impossible to imagine my brother being grown-up. And me being grown-up. I will never give up my legos.

I still need to organise my wedding holy hell I am terrible at this.

Summing up my thoughts in both this post and the comments: How the fuckity fuck can people not realise how awesome Natasha/Black Widow is? IF YOU DISAGREE, WE HAVE VERY DIFFERENT MEMORIES OF BUDAPEST, OKAY? Also, see title of post. I can has icons?

A couple fic recs:
By Arwen Lune -- Rock Happy A Generation Kill/SGA fusion, or; Brad Colbert in Atlantis. "You know what's really weird about the whole thing?" Brad finally said. Nate raised en eyebrow. "Apart from the whole highly classified, inter-branch, civilian and international, can't-tell-you-what-our-program-is-called-without-non-disclosure-paperwork, independent-thinker selecting, amiable Air Force and Corps officer cooperation thing?" Also, Brad Colbert mentioned in Rock Happy that he found a Shit My CO Says list on the Atlantis wiki. Rock Happy is still a WIP but what I've gathered from the notes she is close to wrapping it up, and then intends to write shorter fics featuring the Generation Kill boys in Atlantis. Normally I steer clear of WIPs because I hate the long waits, but she's been fairly regular.

By auburn -- Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves John Sheppard/Rodney McKay Summary: Vala Mal Doran and her partners, renegades Jehan abd-Ba'al and Meredith McKay, hijack the Tau'ri ship Prometheus and leave the Milky Way behind in search of the Lost City of the Ancients, Atlantis. This is a long read with plenty of action and suspense, that parallels many canon events but also takes some new twists, and also explores some things the show never touched on, like just WHY everyone manages to mostly understand each other, except some languages and the written word. For the most part, I enjoyed it immensely, although I don't know if it's personal preference/head canon, I just felt Carter got a bit of a raw deal, but then the author's main focus was on Vala, Jehan, and Meredith as the core cast of this tale. There's a couple shorter pieces set in the same 'verse that I haven't read yet.

By copperbadge/sam_storyteller -- Avengers: A Partial Dictionary Of The 21st Century Steve/Tony but really a gorgeous exploration of the 21st Century by Steve, with some interesting extrapolations about the other Avengers... It's amazing what you can keep in the refrigerator. By the time the team is living in Stark Mansion, the big industrial fridge in the kitchen is packed. Bruce and Natasha tried to institute the "everyone gets a shelf" rule, but Tony just eats whatever's there and Thor doesn't really understand the concept of personal property very well and Clint positively delights in eating other peoples' food, because he says it tastes better if it's stolen. And, and, there's just this reference to Xavier/Magneto that tugged my heartstrings...

By dduane -- "Mycroft's Delight" okay, it's supposed to be BBC Sherlock but I haven't seen that, so I was picturing Stephen Fry's Mycoft from the movie, bust still. Part of me just loves the fact a published author doesn't hesitate to write fanfic (esp. after that ONTD post about author's opinions on fanfic--mainly, the authors they chose to quote mostly were quite dickish about it), and the story itself is delightful to sink into, and, bonus, she included a recipe at the end.

That's all for now...

Um, I don't know if I want to put up a tree this year. Alan and I have no plans to have family over or anything, so why do it? But it's Christmas and we have a black tree and stuff. Well I can figure it out soon enough I guess.

And then, [livejournal.com profile] diea made an fb status update about eggnog. Well, of course she did. Christmas is coming and all that. But it, of course, reminded me of a quote, "Eggnog, then. Noggy eggs. Eggs that are somewhat nogged." -Sirius Black, [livejournal.com profile] shoebox_project Aaaaaand I thought, my god, I haven't checked Shoebox in years... how is my beloved unfinished fanfic, one of the very first pieces I ever read? How is it doing these days?

Well, OMG! Some ruddy bastard hacked it and deleted the whole damn thing! A very important lesson to us all to be very careful about what email addresses we have linked to our accounts and to make sure to keep those email address valid, or get rid of them entirely. But still, all is not lost. Shoebox is preserved in .pdf format and I found the links and all that, but I also wandered over to [livejournal.com profile] cult_sbp (where we can talk about how Shoebox has affected our lives, and affects it still) and I discovered some lovely person was putting together an .epub and .mobi format for those of us with e-readers. How awesome is that? So awesome.

So at Thanksgiving my mum had my step-dad over... I know they're not married anymore but that's the easiest way to describe my relationship to him. He's still my step-dad even if not legally so. Anyway, he's incredibly anti-technology, so he and I haven't kept very close contact since I moved back to New Zealand. But mum had the wonderful idea to get him to sit down and talk with me on Skype at Thanksgiving, so I could ask him myself if he would come to my wedding. It took him a few minutes but he really warmed up to being able to have a face-to-face conversation over the computer. Apparently the request is in that mum show him how to set it up on his computer now lmao.

Also have come up with colours for wedding, would like royal blue, light blue and silver. Along with the medieval/fantasy theme. Rudimentary guest list, now I just need to figure out a venue and also look at possible group rates for accommodation (as big as our house is, we can't house everyone). Also figured instead of a traditional tier cake to go for a flat one with fancy artwork on the icing. There were jokes about using my king and queen lego figurines as the bride and groom to pay homage to my lego obsession...

Alan and I finally got to try out our newly revamped cinemas the other night, to see Immortals 3D. First time I've gone to a 3D movie. Apart from omg the price, altogether was rather cool. We were also going to have dinner at the Wendy's that has just opened up. I don't really remember the menu that well from my time living in the States but another fast food chain for variety, we had hoped to check it out. Of course, everyone else had the same idea and it was crowded and so we got dinner elsewhere and we shall try it out sometime when the novelty has worn off a bit maybe.

Also, our strawberry plants are doing very well with many berries ripening as I type... in fact I had best go water them before I forget.

So I realise some people probably could care less to know this about my body, but this is one of the first months in ages I haven't needed painkillers to get me through the first day of bleeding hell. Wonder what I've done differently in the lead up to allow that lovely break. Also, I am shockingly bad at remembering to pay attention to the dates to keep an accurate count, because while I am fairly regular I've never been, say, exactly 28 days apart or something. Just something I really should keep better track of.

A couple people pointed out an article and website regarding women and sexual harassment on the street... quickly had to click the 'x' before overwhelming feminist rage kicked in. Not the best time to read about how much some men suck.

That being said, my man is rather awesome. And adoring. And adorkable. I'm such a mushy girl for him.

The store he has been working so hard on setting up the last two months is at last finished and opened on Friday. Friends and family got to come check it out on Thursday night, it looks pretty cool. I also got to speak with the owners and Tricia wants a formal talk with me next week about if and where I could fit in there. Soooooooooo fingers crossed. I would really love to get a job there. And soon his hours should settle down so hopefully I will get to see more of my darling again.

He was cracking up, they had an 8-page article/ad in the local newspaper which included photos and mini-bios of all the managers, and he had people coming into the store and recognising him. Plus one of the reps he deals with was like, "That bio was so you!" Also he got given a DeWalt drill worth $700 as a prize for selling the most DeWalt products in one day, ever, of all the stores. Pretty awesome.

They had a deal at our local video shop 5 ex-rentals for $45 (avg ex-rental is $12.99 this puts them at $9 ea), so Alan got us The Last Airbender, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, Resident Evil: Afterlife, Despicable Me, and The Legend of the Guardians. Have only watched the 1st two so far... found the acting in the first one to be mediocre but the effects were way awesome. Enjoyed the second one immensely, was a bit of light-hearted fun and I have to admit I loved the tie-in with the Fantasia scene.

With the theatre in our town being closed (I hear it's getting a big revamp) there have been so many movies we've missed on the big screen, but now we have a 50" it's not so bad lmao. Still, with winter coming on trips to the beach for sun-bathing are not going to be the thing, and will start to be too cold for kayaking before long (haven't done nearly as much of that as I should have). So really hoping the movie theatre reopens soon so we can make that a winter event to break the boredom.

I had to return some books to the library today, a right mix... one was a Star Trek one called Federation, one was called Oath of Fealty by Elizabeth Moon, a new series based in her Deed of Paksenarrion universe, which is quite cool to see she's writing in again. The other two were Tamora Pierce, Terrier about Beka Cooper of Tortall (new heroine yay!) and Withering Stones from the Circle of Magic universe. Just found Will of the Emperess at the library today, which is the one from that 'verse I haven't read yet.

I really should see about acquiring the other books by Tamora Pierce. They're fun adventures with female protagonists who can be strong and fierce but also girls. It's good.

My headphones for my mp3 player died the other week, they had last me about two years and were really good. I was using the earbuds that came with the player originally but they hurt and the sound quality was crap. So when I was in town I checked out Dick Smith electronics and turns out they're still selling that particular model, so I got a new set.

And since I was in town, I did a bit of other shopping. Got some shorts and a t-shirt from JayJays, a pretty sundress from Millers (for an old lady shop the dress was remarkably not old-lady), some socks and dvds from The Wharehouse. I had to get Star Trek because our one we got as an ex-rental and ended up being watched so much by Joe that one scene won't play properly on our dvd player, although apparently works fine on his dvd player. I got Spy Game 'cause it's an awesome movie and was really cheap, and I got Street Kings because it was clearance and I'm curious about it.

We'll see how it turns out.

Also got ex-rentals the other night, How to Train Your Dragon, The Losers, and the new Karate Kid. Haven't watched Karate Kid yet but the other two were good.

xans: Xans (Money Back)
Confession... I have not watched the HP movies past Goblet of Fire. I also have not read Deathly Hallows.

Why? Tbh, I think I Od'd on HP fic. I got so caught up in fanon and the "better" ideas out there that I lost hold with canon. Also I really hated how whiny Harry got.

So, what am I doing? I'm taking a huge break from HP. Once all the movies are out, I will probably acquire the books (I only have 1, 2, and 4 I think) and reread each one, one after the other. At the end of each, watch the movie. In that way, immerse myself in HP again, and try and enjoy it without my preconceptions and ideas of how it "ought" to be.

Maybe then I can fall in love with it again.

So... my flatmate Benild has moved out. Other flatmat says he's moving out, too, 'cause he's leaving for Aus on the 27th. *sigh* While we've got someone lined up for Ben's room, I don't know if we've got someone for Clayton's room... and covering the rent between two people sucks. If we can't land something quickly, I may have to move out again as well.

On the upside, I now have a fridge, toaster, and (dodgy) microwave. Plans to buy Ben's washing machine as well... maybe.

Also, I have the coolest cousin ever. Dimitri came to visit on Friday. We went out, had drinks and dinner, more drinks and pool, and lots of catching up. It was a lot of fun, especially given that the last time I saw him was 12 years ago.

He spoiled me, too. Six Toblerone bars, dark chocolate... mmm. And a pearl necklace. *snicker* And then he sneakily left some cash on my bedside table for me to find later to go towards new ID, or helping me move (if I do move). Tres awesome, no?

And Saturday night I went and saw Superbad with Aaron, which was funnier than expected.

Crazily agreed to work three and a half hours at Woolies after an eight hour shift at Mega on Sunday. Was v. tired yesterday. Felt better by buying a dragon bowl thing at the comic book store. Got the feeling the store owner there didn't quite know what to make of a girl browsing his store. Drooled over the Sandman, Lucifer, and Hellblazer comics.

Bought more stuff for parcel for mum and Gary. Joy.

Anyway, keeping this kinda short. Hope y'all are doing fine, and if you're not, well... here's hoping it gets better.

I know, I know. A month ago I was so-not-excited about my birthday. But that quickly changed.

Partially, I was all hyper and happy because I just landed two part-time jobs within two weeks of each other. And that is yay! I'm taking time off school and just working for now, 'cause I need the money and the exp and a better looking CV. And, jobs, yay, I like them.

So, yeah, despite my body doing strange and mean things and making me worry, things were on the up. And, hello, birthday, that's a thing to CELEBRATE!

And I have. Started with a parcel arriving from Mum on Friday with all sorts of lovely little goodies like stripey socks, lacy undies, and Amy Brown art, and little knick knacks. Carried on to Saturday, with lunch at the cafe at work with Dad and Suzy (I got to see Buddy and Truffles, the cute little things) and warning them of the pregnancy possibility...

Then, 8 pm, Blades of Glory. *dies* [livejournal.com profile] abrandnewboom? Everything you said. :D I loved it. Jon Heder was so pretty. Although he had only a short spot, I adore William Fichtner. And, and... yeah. I liked it a lot. I'm soooo tempted to go see it a second time. But I also kinda want to see Transformers, and maybe OotP. We'll see. I actually dreamed went and saw Transformers, and man did that fuck with my mind.

Um, oh, yeah. Sunday, my birthday. I worked. BUT THIS WAS OKAY. For one thing, I kept telling everyone and they said happy birthday all the time. Then there was the sausage sizzle guys, who remembered me telling them last weekend that Sunday was my birthday, and they put a candle in my sausage! *giggles* It melted a little.

A random customer, upon hearing it was my birthday, bought me a card and wrote inside, "To a very special young lady, Happy Birthday. Have a coffee on me." And gave my $5. How fucking sweet is that?!

Iain, Dad, and Suzy showed up late afternoon... Iain's leaving for Japan soon to teach English for a year, hence why Dad and Suzy came down. And they left some stuff of mine and Iain's at my place, but came to see me and give me more presents and cake.

CAKE. I haven't had a birthday cake in years. It's delicious, and all sorts of pretty with scrolly chocolate mousse and little candy roses. Black forest cake. MMM.

Presents... $50 Whitcoulls voucher (I bought the Long Way Round Special Edition set with it) from Dad and Suzy (also my bike earlier this year, it's my big present for like... the next few big celebrations), The Alchemist from Iain, which I've yet to start reading... and a fold-out mirror from a family friend, Catherine.

My parcel from Andrea arrived sometime over the weekend and I got it yesterday. Yay! Black moleskin pants, "Bitch Pills" and other cute knick knacks.

Mum called me last night, and we chatted. OH! I told her about the pregnancy scare, but I'm not pregnant, because, well, my body's birthday gift to me was the absolute knowledge in the form of, well, y'know. *looks down* Told Dad and Suzy when they stopped by on my birthday as well. Everyone's happy. It's all good.

It's been a very sweet, very awesome birthday.

Now, I'm going to see what the f-list has been up to. And read more fic by [livejournal.com profile] ashinae and [livejournal.com profile] linden_jay in my position as "pre-beta beta" *grins*

The good news: two possible jobs to choose from.

The bad news: Plans to see Blades of Glory put on hold, as I had a doctor's visit to make yesterday. TMI(ish) concernting my stupid body )

In other news, I might--might--have some photos for you guys to check out, soon. Maybe. If he gets his shit together and I think they're actually worth sharing. We'll see. Hopefully.

Dodgeball was on last night, and I laughed like a loon. Then I got to watch Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip which is a rather cool show, actually. Thursday nights are becoming my late nights, it seems.

It's just a little thing, but, goddamnit... Eating the last of my nutella and then pretending you know nothing is just fucking low. I'd be less mad if you'd just fronted up about it, instead of pretending in a house with only three people that half a jar of nutella can disappear and I'm not gonna figure out who did it.

Also, really wishing I didn't go to bed when I did last night, because I missed out on a chance to watch Equilibrium again. I hadn't realised it was on after National Treasure. Damnit.

So I watched this movie last night, Frágiles (aka Fragile: A Ghost Story), that I knew absolutely nothing about. Has Calista Flockhart and Robert Roxburgh. Turns out, as scary movies go, it's not bad. It wasn't horribly terrifying, but there were certain moments I kinda wished I had someone to cling to. The ghost chick was rather freaky, really. I totally want to know where their version of Sleeping Beauty came from (the kids in the movie were watching it, and it wasn't Disney's version and the art looked much better).

Got a very good night of sleep last night, and the children were thankfully quiet this morning both flatmate and I got good sleep-ins. Makes up for the horribleness of yesterday morning.

Go look at my userpics. Ask me anything about any one of them--why I chose it, why that fandom, where the hell did I find it--anything at all.

An even bigger challenge: go look at said userpics, pick one, and write a drabble-length piece about it in the comments. It needn't be exactly 100 words. Could be more, could be less, but more than a sentence or two, if you please. If you do this, I will go look at your userpics, and return the favour.

Seriously, is there something about Easter and Jesus' Undead Shindig, or what, that brings out End-of-the-World vibes? I mean, firstly, there's Black Sheep coming out, uhh, tomorrow, and don't make me repeat the Multi-Fandom challenge I mentioned in my last post, and, oh, someone on my f-list chose to point out World War Z right about now... And also, May bring us 28 Weeks Later 'cause Lord knows that movie needs a sequel with, like, none of the original characters... Yeah.

From [livejournal.com profile] officialgaiman, on whether he has to say he likes an adaptation of his books to film:
I think if I didn't like something I'd probably take the Thumper (from Bambi) option and not say anything, unless I felt the world needed to be warned, and then I'd have to choose my words carefully, unless I really really felt the world needed to be warned, in which case I'd warn everyone as best I could, probably standing out by the entrance to the freeway shouting "Don't go and see the Anansi Boys film! They've made them all rabbits! It's now a caper movie set in a chocolate factory!" at the uncaring people driving past.

Well, uh, because we definitely don't want to see Neil standing by the side of the freeway... Let's make a pledge to never ever make such a horrible adaptation. *nods*

President Grant: Mr. West, not every situation requires your patented approach of shoot first, shoot later, shoot some more and then when everybody's dead try to ask a question or two. ~Wild Wild West

I wish I could say my life is full of interesting happenings. It's not. Nothing major is going on... I mean, there's a guy, kind of (I'm not sure what we are, beyond having sex on occasion), and there's life stuff... I'm probably being slack somewhere or another.

My mother, bless her, sent me a money order for $75US that converts to just over $100NZ for bike accessories that I haven't acquired yet. I've thanked her many times, 'cause I'd thought I'd have to save up for that stuff over time.

I've started watching Without a Trace on Thursdays, just because. It's okay, but not a show I think I'll be passionate about.

I texted my dad the other weekend about whether or not he's got my Serenity DVD but he never replied. I don't know what all busy stuff he's got going on in his life, but he's been slow on email replies too. 'Cause he sent my brother and I an email a while ago about some life insurance policy taken out on us when we were kids, that made v. little sense to me, and it took a while for him to reply to my rather confused, "Wha...?" I'm still not sure what it's all about, except that he's kindly contacting the lawyers for us about quotes and stuff.

My brain is clearly on some strange drug, given some of the dreams I've had lately. One involved me sleeping with one guy and pregnant with his kid, when I took up with not only an old one night stand, but a third guy, and, somehwere in all this my family was visiting and being all friendly to everyone. I'm still not sure how no one was mad at me for playing three guys like that. And being pregnant.

...and that's about it, really. Nothing interesting here, carry on your way, 'bye now.
