Okay, so, I live in a hall. It's a small hall. Only 12 of us, all girls. But I swear, most of them can be so uncivilised sometimes. They make the worst messes--or they have boys over who make worse messes and don't make them clean it up. There's always, like... this assumption that someone else will do it. No one ever seems willing to take responsibility, and when someone finally does there's usually little grattitude.

My other pet peeve is lights. At night before I go to bed, I end up going around the hall checking that all the doors are locked, and turning off extra lights. We don't turn off all the lights at night. That would be stupid. Someone could hurt themselves stumbling around in the pitch blackness of some places. At the same time, if people aren't up and about, there's little need for several of the lights. We don't need to be completely blinded if we have to make a midnight stumble to the bathroom, or to the kitchen for a drink/midnight snack.

There's three lights in the bathroom. One over the stalls, one over the sinks, and one over the showers. At night, I'll often turn off the middle one, over the sinks, because it's still possible to see what you're doing in the stalls and wash your hands in the lesser light coming from the showers. I don't know how many times I've come back later to find the middle one turned back on by whoever, for whatever reason. But honestly, I don't care if you turned it on so you could check your reflection in the mirror to see if any pimples have sprouted up. It doesn't need to stay on!

If everyone's off and gone to bed, I make sure the TV is off and turn the lights off in the common room. Hell, even if there's just no one in there and they're on, and people might come in later, I'll turn them off. Why waste? Particularly on Thursday or Saturday nights when people come back in the wee hours and end up in there having a snack and whatever else, being a roudy lot. (Poor Liz) But I get annoyed when I get up in the morning and come into the common room to find the lights on in a daylight filled room. It's wasteful.

Also, I will turn off a couple of the hallway lights. Certainly not all of them. But the one in the hall towards the bathroom and one of the doors out doesn't need to be on. One can see to walk it from the light coming from the bathroom. Or from the entrance hall--that one is always on. I'll also turn off the lights in the hall towards Annalise's, Elyshia's, and my rooms and the kitchen. Usually there's enough light from the entrance hall, and the kitchen light can act as a beacon if it's been left on.

But I hate it when people leave that one on as well. For one thing, the lights from the hall to the kitchen, and the kitchen light are both visible in the cracks of my door when I turn all my lights off at night. And I really prefer to sleep in utter darkness, or as close as I can get. As it is my curtains aren't blacklighters and lights from over by the dining hall filter through all the time. So, I'll usually turn the kitchen light off any time around midnight. But of course, someone will come along at 1 or something in want of a drink or snack and turn it back on. And leave it on. Or they'll come back from town and grab a bunch of food and leave it on. Pisses me off when no one's in the kitchen and it's on.

So anyway, I woke up at 5-ish this morning, all thirsty and stuff. So I got up and stumbled into the kitchen--the light was off and not blinding me, thank goodness--for a glass of water. And to fill my water bottle and put it in the fridge. Then my bladder asserted itself so I wandered into the bathroom, where, you guessed it, the middle light was on. So I turned that off on my way out. Then I thought that maybe I should check the common room where, yep, the lights were still blazing. I turned them off, and then I wrote a message on the white board complaining about extra lights being left on after everyone's gone to bed. I tried being optimistic--maybe it would have an effect.

When I got up later this morning there was this oh so lovely condescending reply. (I think Victoria wrote it) It was all about how last year someone broke their leg tumbling down the stairs so it was probably worth the extra 5c or whatever to leave the lights on. *fists clench* I had to take a very strong hold of the snark begging to be let loose and leave it with clarifying the lights in the common room and kitchen were the bone of contention. I'm pretty sure Elyshia then came along and erased the whole thing.

But honestly? Would have loved to write: Oh, aren't we a clever one now? Don't try being a smart ass with me: my snark beats yours 10 to 1. I seriously doubt someone will break a leg falling down the stairs because the lights in the common room and kitchen were turned off. Nor, I notice, do we need to see by ALL the lights in the bathroom during the wee hours--it totally wrecks the night vision. Half the lights in this place could be off when people are supposed to be sleeping, allowing the lights to last longer than if they're recklessly wasted.

Stupid cow.
