So the first big quake I ever felt was the 6.8 Nisqually Valley quake in Washington back in 2001. That was middle-of-the-day get-under-your-desks material. As the time I was a teenager so it was more exciting than scary.

This?

Well I'm kinda glad I'd just finished peeing. I heard it coming, and there was just something about the sound that said, "Brace, this one's gonna be good..." Most earthquakes, I barely get out of my seat, but this one I'm kinda glad I stood in the doorway for, because the house rocked. And rolled. And books fell off shelves and I heard my china cats fall off their shelf (they survived).

It went on for quite some time. Of course, once the shakes died down it was straight on to Facebook and Twitter to find out who else felt it, and get the news from geonet about magnitude and location. *shudder*

I'm okay, we're okay, everyone felt it all over just about.

Not normally scared of earthquakes... hell, I remember that 6.8 one all those years ago... but still, slightly freaky to hear ominous rumbling and then have the house start shaking, and not knowing how bad it's gonna be. Thankfully... not bad.

But speaking of earthquakes... There was that huge earthquake in Hawkes Bay on Feb 3, 1931. Like, every kiwi knows about it, right? Well, my grandmother was in that earthquake. And my mum has been reading through her old diaries, and came across the entries leading up to and just after that disaster.

For the sake of posterity )

Any and all errors are of my mother's making. :P

Yesterday I was woken up around for in the morning because of an earthquake. I don't think I like earthquakes that happen during the night. It's not fun to be shaken awake. While I have to near of the house falling down, there's an instinctive part of me that gets startled because I'm so asleep I might fall out of bed. (not that I did) But it was funny in the morning when there were those of us who felt it, and those of us who didn't.
The people over at Walter Dyer had a pizza party last Sunday that made US crave pizza, so one of us left a message on the board... and then Elyshia asked when, and what types we wanted. I wrote garlic bread, and meatlovers, and then put (sorry Kate!) because she's vegetarian. So when she put up vegetarian she wrote (sorry all!). Glad to know she has a sense of humor.
Just waiting on my laundry... oh so fun. Not. There's four washing machines and four dryers for pretty much all of Moginie village. Glad I decided not to do it on the weekend.
